JESUS FOR BUSY PEOPLE
Jesus for Busy People is a podcast on the freedom, authenticity, spirituality, and identity of Jesus. No agenda, no politics, just Jesus.
Who is Jesus and why does he matter?
The identity of Jesus, his personality, life, and spirituality remain relevant in the 21st century. For many, Jesus is a mystery, enigma, or slogan. For others, he is the one they follow through life. For me, Jesus is the answer to the four concerns of our contemporary life: authenticity, spirituality, identity, and freedom. We seek to be people of authenticity and spirituality, knowing who we are, and walking in freedom. I believe reflecting on Jesus enables us to fully understand, appreciate, and apply positive principles in our own lives that transform our relationship with God and others.
Biography: The Rev. Dr. Michael J. Sutton
Welcome to this introduction of 'Jesus for Busy People,' a podcast on Jesus for anyone interested in relevant Christian spirituality for our confusing, chaotic, and crazy world. The podcast is about equipping, encouraging, and empowering people in their journey of life, faith, and spirituality,
As Christians, we live in busy, uncertain, and challenging times, with rapid social, economic and political change at home, and war and conflict abroad. It is often difficult to spend time thinking, reflecting, praying, meditating, or cherishing important relationships.
During these busy days, another challenge for Christian spirituality is that the simple message of Jesus is often suppressed, rewritten and twisted by many agendas. Jesus has been recruited into our political projects and become part of the Culture Wars.
In September 2021, I set up Freedom Matters Today to teach about freedom from a Christian perspective. I ran a weekly podcast, created a publishing imprint, and promoted Christian spirituality around the world. This included writing ten books seeking to apply a Christian perspective to various contemporary issues.
I often wondered why Jesus and the apostles said little about politics. They are so unlike us, as we are obsessed with politics, presidents and policies. We argue, debate, contest, and fight over every inch of the political and social landscape, and the essence of Christianity gets lost in the culture wars, ideology, nationalism and politics.
When I was writing some reflections on Jesus in the Temple, I realized that Jesus, by his authenticity, spirituality, and identity, was radically transforming his world. Jesus was fully engaged in the world, speaking, living, and breathing a relevant, authentic life.
This is the life we are called to, being people of authenticity and spirituality, people who know who we are, living in freedom.
Therefore, at the end of 2024, I decided to pivot away from applying Christian spirituality to politics, towards a regular reflection on the life of Jesus.
It also seemed to me that as busy people, we have changed the way we communicate. We don't live in the long conversation, the rambling chat, but in the supermarket, the train schedule, traffic jams, family life, duties, and constant surprises. We have 'elevator chats' with friends or short conversations with neighbors. We are all busy.
As a result, we can change our world not with lectures or 3-hour long podcasts, but one short conversation at a time. Jesus for Busy People is a 6-minute reflection on the life of Jesus, with one main idea, that we can apply to our lives and then talk about it with others.
That way, it becomes something true, something grounded in the Bible, something authentic about the life and significance of Jesus. That is the gist of Jesus for Busy People, a short reflection on Jesus, for busy people, in our busy world today.
